Inaugural Task Force Meeting in September
August 8, 2025—The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) has selected members of the new Family Medicine Scholarship Academy Task Force to support educational scholarship by creating structured mentorship experiences.
The task force will be chaired by STFM Research Committee Chair John Epling, MD, MSEd, professor and vice chair of Research and Population Health at Virginia Tech Carilion.
The inaugural task force members are:

More Information About the Task Force
Objectives of the Family Medicine Scholarship Academy Task Force include:
- Defining the scope and purpose of a family medicine scholarship academy
- Reviewing current academic family medicine mentoring programs and develop strategies to standardize mentorship approaches and training, reduce duplicative efforts, and consolidate and promote opportunities under the Academy umbrella
- Identifying gaps in training of mentors and mentees and develop training to fill those gaps
- Identifying or developing opportunities for members to receive mentorship in research design, conduct, analysis, and funding
- Creating a toolkit with educational resources on research methodology and examples of scholarly work
- Identifying or creating programming to educate members on evidence-based educational scholarship knowledge and skills, including research methods, survey design, IRB processes, data collection, statistical analysis, and scientific writing
- Strengthening collaborative work with other family medicine organizations (ADFM, AFMRD and NAPCRG) to facilitate scholarship
