STFM Begins Residency Redesign Initiative With Launch of Competency-Based Medical Education Project

ABFM Foundation Provides Funding

October 1, 2022STFM has received a grant from the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Foundation to support family medicine residency programs as they redesign their residencies to meet new ACGME family medicine program requirements.

The grant will support the first phase of a multi-year project to equip residency programs to deliver competency-based education (CBME) and assessment. By December 2023, STFM will:

  • Conduct a consensus-building summit
  • Launch a task force to develop strategies and resources to improve competency-based education in family medicine residency programs
  • Update existing STFM faculty development resources to align with the new ACGME family medicine requirements

"The new requirements will require changes in how education is delivered and assessed," said Linda Montgomery, MD, vice chair of education in the department of family medicine at the University of Colorado. Dr Montgomery has been selected to chair STFM's CMBE project. "The new requirements are less about meeting number requirements and more about ensuring that residents can demonstrate competence."

Future phases of the CBME project will focus on faculty development, plus implementation, piloting, and dissemination of CBME resources and assessment tools.

A call for task force members will go out in late 2022.

The CBME project is one of three tracks of work that was approved by the STFM Board of Directors. STFM is also refining strategies to:

  • Create an innovative model for Residency Learning Collaboratives built on a consistent, sustainable infrastructure
  • Integrate interprofessional behavioral healthcare into residency programs
