Comment on Proposed ACGME Revisions to the Family Medicine Program Requirements
December 14, 2021—The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is now accepting comments on a focused revision to the Family Medicine Program Requirements. Comments are due by January 28, 2022.
Every 10 years, Review Committees review their specialty Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. These proposed requirements are the culmination of extensive work and valuable conversations the Review Committee for Family Medicine has been having with the family medicine community for the last two years. The Committee and community have, prior to making any revisions, proactively, rigorously, and creatively contemplated what the specialty, the family medicine physician, and the health care needs of the future would look like. Insights and themes derived from this technique, as well as input from the community on the current requirements, factored significantly in these revisions.
To assist with understanding the rationale behind these major changes, the Committee also developed a webinar that gives an excellent high level overview of the revision.
Additionally, the RC FM and the ABFM are announcing the launch of an ACGME Innovation in Residency Education Initiative (or AIRE project) with an optional fourth year of training. The ACGME will host requests for proposals.
STFM will submit an organizational response on the revision, along with other members of the family, and will be gathering member comments through specific Collaboratives.
Your individual responses are critical to help guide the RC to meet the goals of the future of family medicine. Follow the instructions on the “review and comment” page of ACGME’s website to submit your individual comments.
