STFM is honored to announce five new members to the esteemed Bishop Society, which is a community of experienced senior leaders in STFM and is intended to recognize senior leaders in academic family medicine.
February 11, 2026 — STFM is honored to announce five new additions to the Bishop Society. The new members are: Diane Harper, MD, MPH, University of Michigan; José Rodríguez, MD, Meharry Medical College; Sarina Schrager, MD, MS, University of Wisconsin; Terrence Steyer, MD, Medical University of South Carolina; and William Ventres, MD, MA, (retired) University of Arkansas.The Bishop Society is a community of experienced senior leaders in STFM and is intended to serve as a professional home for mid- and senior-career faculty who have held multiple leadership positions within and outside of family medicine. Diane Harper, MD, MPH, University of Michigan
Dr Harper is a nationally recognized researcher whose leadership across multiple family medicine organizations brings exceptional research expertise. A long-time mentor and reviewer for STFM, she provides valuable research perspectives and strengthens the Society’s academic and scientific contributions.
José Rodríguez, MD, Meharry Medical College
Dr Rodríguez is an accomplished and visionary leader whose ongoing growth, transformative mentoring, and significant contributions to STFM demonstrate exceptional dedication. A prolific scholar and thought leader, he has advanced family medicine through research, editorial leadership, and unwavering advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Sarina Schrager, MD, MS, University of Wisconsin
Dr Schrager is a nationally recognized leader in family medicine with outstanding achievements in research, teaching, and editorial leadership. Her impactful work with STFM, including her editorial role (Family Medicine) and leadership in the Wisconsin Research and Education Network, reflects her exceptional dedication to advancing scholarship, mentorship, and clinical excellence.
Terrence Steyer, MD, Medical University of South Carolina
Dr Steyer is a nationally recognized leader in family medicine whose experience as a dean offers valuable insight for STFM. His extensive leadership in education and advocacy, along with his deep commitment to clinical and academic excellence, demonstrate his dedication to advancing the field. A long-time contributor to and past president of STFM, he has profoundly influenced students, residents, and faculty, embodying the values and mission of the Society.
William Ventres, MD, MA, (retired) University of Arkansas
Dr Ventres is a distinguished family physician and educator with nearly 4 decades of experience, offering a vital rural and community-based perspective. His longstanding commitment to teaching, reflective writing, and storytelling in family medicine brings depth, authenticity, and a unique voice to the Society’s leadership. He is also a former member and ongoing champion of the STFM Foundation.
Bishop Society Lecture at 2026 STFM Annual Spring Conference
The Bishop Society holds an annual meeting at each STFM Annual Spring Conference to discuss current challenges facing our discipline.The Bishop Society Lecture session at the 2026 STFM Annual Spring Conference will be "Teaching and Assessing a New Professionalism: A Discussion With the STFM Task Force on Professionalism in Medical Education". Presenters will be Joseph Gravel, MD, STFM past president, and Takudzwa Shumba, MD, MPH. The conference will be May 2–6 in New Orleans, LA.
More About the Bishop Society Selection Process
The Bishop Society Selection Committee selects up to five new Bishop Society members annually. The committee includes the three leaders of the Bishop Society, the immediate STFM past president, the STFM executive director/CEO, and up to two Bishop Society general members.
