Building Better Clinical Training Experiences: A Learning Collaborative

Implementation Guide

Family medicine departments, in collaboration with other departments and professions are in the midst of a pilot project designed to increase the pool of community-based preceptors and the quality of training at ambulatory sites.

This guide outlines expectations and implementation strategies for sites that were selected for the pilot.

This project is funded by the American Board of Family Medicine Foundation.

Pilot Timeline

2019

  • January 3: Call for applications opens
  • January 25, 1–2 pm EST or 4–5 pm EST: Q&A Webinar for potential applicants
  • February 2, 7:30 am: Q&A Breakfast Table for potential applicants at the Conference on Medical Student Education
  • February 22: Call for applications closes
  • Mid March: Pilot sites announced
  • April 2: Introductory webinar (required) and projects begin
  • April 26-May 17: Pre-survey for Clerkship/Rotation Directors and Coordinators
  • October: Site visit planning with evaluation team
  • October 24-25: Learning Collaborative meeting in Kansas City (required)
  • Ongoing 2019-2020: Site visits by evaluation team/tactic team

2020

  • March 20: Preceptor email lists due for survey
  • April-August: Post-survey for clerkship/rotation directors,  coordinators and preceptors
  • September: Pilot projects complete
  • October: Post measurement data due
