Purchases of Classic Literature on Family Medicine Will Benefit STFM Foundation
STFM has republished the The Intellectual Basis of Family Practice, the classic book by G. Gayle Stephens, MD. Dr Stephens is widely considered to be one of the founders of family medicine, and his collection of essays and lectures will help this generation of professionals gain a deeper understanding of the ideological roots of the specialty.
This text will be of interest to medical students who are deciding their vocational specialty, and residents who have already chosen family medicine but are still developing their professional identities, and your faculty who are looking for ways to communicate the heart of the specialty to their learners.
Proceeds from book purchases will benefit the STFM Foundation, which supports scholarships and other opportunities for the next generation of family medicine educators. Dr Stephens was the founding president of the STFM Foundation.
"The Intellectual Basis of Family Practice is a seminal collection of essays that explores the historical, moral, and political foundations of family medicine. Dr Gayle Stephens' timeless insights trace the roots of medical education and practice that gave rise to family medicine in the 1960s, as well as the political and institutional barriers to building a health care system grounded in primary care in the United States." — John Frey, MD, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin and past STFM president
